Stand straight, let your arms hang, and set the top just below your wrists. Anything higher and your shoulders do the work your body weight should be doing.Then leave it clear. A reading corner is a chair, a light, and somewhere to put a cup down. Everything else is decoration, and decoration is what usually pushes the cup off the arm of the chair.Put the light behind your shoulder rather than overhead. Overhead light flattens the page and throws your own shadow onto it.Keep the shelf within reach of the seat. If finishing one book means standing up to find the next, you will find your phone instead.

For a year I baked on the weekends because that was the only day I could sit near an oven for six hours. Then I moved the rise into the fridge and the whole thing loosened up.Mix at night, let it sit cold until the next evening, bake when you get home. The flavour is better for the wait, and the timing bends around you instead of the other way around.The only rule is to let it come back to room temperature before it goes in. Cold dough into a hot oven gives you a dense middle and a lot of regret.

I walk the same two kilometres every Sunday. It sounded dull when I started and it is the part of the week I now protect hardest.Repeating a route strips out the novelty, and what is left is the weather, the light, and how the ground gives underfoot. In fog you hear the path before you see it.Nothing about it is impressive. That is rather the point.
